Description of Position

Diablo Valley College is seeking a full-time academic assistant professor of Early Childhood Education beginning January, 2017. The position combines overall supervision and administration of the Campus Child Development Laboratory School and teaching Early Childhood Education classes. The assignment may include theory, method, observation, and practicum courses in child growth and development, early childhood education, and curriculum.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In addition to contractual duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. advancing student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines; 2. developing and implementing student learning outcomes assessment processes for courses and programs; 3. collaborating in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review; 4. engaging in department program improvement initiatives; 5. participating in department, division, and college committees; 6. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide; 7. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/learning strategies; 8. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics; 9. informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements; 10. preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress; 11. maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines; 12. posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy; 13. participating in College’s shared governance processes; 14. supervising all aspects related to the operation of the on-campus Child Development Laboratory School; 15. providing leadership and guidance for daily operational program of the Child Development Laboratory School; 16. managing the annual budget in conjunction with the Early Childhood Education Department; 17. insuring health and safety of children and overseeing the implementation of the nutrition program; 18. arranging for and supervising maintenance and repair of Child Development Laboratory School facility and overseeing planning for equipping indoor and outdoor learning environments; 19. insuring compliance with campus, state and county regulations concerned with the operation of the Child Development Laboratory School as well as maintaining records and submitting required reports; 20. insuring that the Child Development Laboratory School philosophy, policies, program and methods follow educational guidelines and pedagogy of the Early Childhood Education Department. Guiding staff in the development, review and updating of Center policies and developmentally appropriate curriculum. Overseeing staff in-service training; 21. supervising classified and hourly staff. Interviewing, hiring and supervising hourly assistants and substitute staff. Conducting regular staff meetings and participating in staff evaluation processes; 22. Planning and implementing the orientation of parents to school policies and disseminating information regarding Child Development Laboratory School policies and procedures; 23. Overseeing enrollment and maintaining files of the children attending the Child Development Laboratory School and maintaining a community resource referral system for children and families; 24. maintaining public relations with the community, promote enrollment in the children’s programs, and arrange for and welcome visitors to the Child Development Laboratory School; 25. modeling sensitivity to diversity and equity issues.

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:

The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications (earned degrees must be from an accredited college/university): Master’s degree in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education, or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education OR bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND master’s degree in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies, or family and consumer studies OR A valid California Community College Instructor Credential authorizing full-time instruction in Early Childhood Education/Child Development OR The equivalent. Desirable Qualifications:

1. Demonstrated commitment to student learning and to the success of all students in the open-access learning environment of a community college.
2. Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of diversity, and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, cultures, and learning styles, as well as students with disabilities or varied levels of academic preparation.
3. Experience in administering and supervising infant/toddler and preschool programs, including fiscal management and enrollment management.
4. Experience in college teaching of child development and early childhood, and supervising practicum students in a college laboratory early childhood setting.
5. Experience in personnel management and promoting positive staff relations.
6. Experience integrating current research theory and practice into an early childhood center based program (Reggio Emilia, Project Approach, Constructivism, Emergent Curriculum, Attachment Theory).
7. Experience in parent-child relations and parent education.
