Event Date: May 25, 2017 - July 12, 2017
Event Name: Faculty Diversity Internship Program in Sacramento

Event Description: PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The LRCCD Faculty Diversity Internship Program is instrumental in developing a talented and dynamic pool of community college instructors who mirror the diversity of our student population which encompasses people with different cultural, ethnic, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical ability, academic preparation, learning style, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The Faculty Diversity Internship Program is not an online or distance education training opportunity. Interns are required to participate, in-person, in seven Saturday workshops emphasizing community college teaching in preparation for completing a 16-week semester internship. The LRCCD Faculty Diversity Internship Program is committed to providing opportunities for faculty interns to learn and practice teaching strategies appropriate for diverse community college students as a means of recruiting qualified faculty mirroring our student population and committed to a diversity of perspectives. PROGRAM STRUCTURE: The Faculty Diversity Internship Program is designed to provide hands-on experience in an educational setting with a faculty mentor for one semester. To enhance the intern’s introduction to the field of instruction, LRCCD provides approximately 40 hours of community college teaching instruction (at no cost to the intern). Note: Faculty interns must participate in the fall program prior to the spring semester in which their internship starts. Fall training topics include an overview of the CCC system and its students and faculty, preparing for a class, assessing student learning, effective classroom strategies, and working with diverse learning styles. SELECTION CRITERIA: The criteria used in selecting candidates for interview will include: (1) subject matter competence in chosen discipline, (2) academic preparation and/or occupational expertise, and (3) demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.
