ABOUT THE COLLEGE

College of the Canyons is dedicated to being a leading two-year college, recognized locally, regionally, statewide and nationally for technical advancement, institutional effectiveness, student support, model academic and professional programs, excellence in teaching and learning, fostering a broad range of community partnerships, maximizing student access, and for the sense of community that we provide to our students and staff.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This program is a unique opportunity for qualified individuals to explore and develop a career in community college instruction. FIT combines pedagogical training with mentorship and hands-on classroom experience, providing invaluable training through participation in projects and assignments that allow for the practical application of academic knowledge and the development of skills necessary for a career in higher education.

The Future Instructors in Training program begins with preparatory course, and continues with an internship, where each participant based on their demonstrated aptitude and career goals, is paired with a mentor from among COC’s dynamic faculty. Following successful completion of the Internship, FIT participants graduate with the preparation and tools necessary to pursue part time teaching positions at COC.

PROGRAM COMMITMENT AND STRUCTURE

Program has two Phases:

Phase 1: Fall Preparatory Coursework-Prior to the Fall semester, Interns must participate in a preparatory coursework schedule for nine (9) evenings. The nine structured evenings are generally in a three-day/three-week sessions model.

Phase 2: The Fall internship-In the Fall semester, interns complete a total of 20 hours of mentorship with a COC faculty member. The Mentors/Courses are assigned upon acceptance to the program.

ADDITIONAL INCENTIVE TO JOINING THE FIT PROGRAM

Santa Clarita Community College District has one of the few award winning Professional Development programs in the state. As an Intern and upon entering the program, interns have access to nearly 700 professional development opportunities.
