Position Summary

Through faculty training and classroom internship, the LRCCD Faculty Diversity Internship Program (FDIP) is instrumental in developing a talented and dynamic pool of community college instructors who mirror the diversity of our student population which encompasses people with different cultural, racial, ethnic, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical ability, academic preparation, learning style, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

FDIP interns are required to participate in fall Saturday training sessions using a hybrid format split between face to face and online trainings—emphasizing community college teaching in preparation for completing a spring16-week semester internship.

The FDIP is committed to providing opportunities for faculty interns to learn and practice teaching strategies appropriate for diverse community college students as a means of recruiting qualified faculty that mirror our student population and are committed to a diversity of perspectives. Our current student demographic profile is as follows: African American (10%); Asian/Pacific Islander (18%); Latinx (28%); Native American (1%); White (37%); Other/unknown (6%).

FDIP is a voluntary one-year internship program that provides training and hands-on instructional experience with a faculty member. FDIP participants are not guaranteed an employment position at the conclusion of the program, but are strongly encouraged to apply and compete for open faculty positions in the District.

Successful participants commit to a one-year training and internship program.

Fall: LRCCD provides approximately 48 hours of community college faculty training (at no cost to the intern). Faculty interns must participate in the fall training program prior to starting the spring internship. Fall training topics include an overview of the California Community College (CCC) system and its students and faculty, preparing for a class, assessing student learning, effective classroom strategies, and working with diverse learning styles.

Spring: The FDIP provides hands-on instructional experience with a faculty mentor for one semester in the spring. This may be in an online course or a face-to-face course depending on instructor/mentor availability.

The criteria used in selecting candidates for interview will include:

(1) demonstrated equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and demonstrated ability to successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.

(2) subject matter competence in chosen discipline; and

(3) academic preparation and/or occupational expertise.

All qualified candidates will be invited for a Zoom interview. We will select up to 45 interns to participate in the program.

We accept application packets for ALL DISCIPLINES offered at any of the four Los Rios colleges. Candidates who do not have a degree in a discipline taught at Los Rios cannot be paired with a discipline faculty member and as such cannot participate.
